Soon after singing at an anti-Mafia rally in Italy, Miriam Makeba is dead at age 76. This charismatic and courageous woman was found by the cause of anti-apartheid, and was exiled from her native South Africa for twenty years, which she put to good use in spreading the word about conditions in Africa.
Musicians, social historians, Africans, and those of us who were molded by the amazing ideas and movements of the sixties will miss her greatly. May she rest in peace, and may she never be forgotten.
